Mudflow victims from four more villages demand compensation
SURABAYA (Antara): Residents of four more villages Sunday demonstrated at East Java’s turnpike to demand compensation for their properties, which are threatened by mud flowing from gasfield owned by PT Lapindo Brantas.
Hundreds of residents from the villages of Pejarakan, Kedungcangkring, Mindi, and Besuki blocked trucks carrying materials to heighten dam to prevent mud from spreading into wider areas.
The four villages were excluded from the map of areas, whose residents received compensation.
“We, residents of the four villages, were only fooled by the government with its empty promise. Who is responsible if the dam falls,” protest coordinator Zakaria was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
Sidoarjo deputy regent Saiful Illah said the regental administration supported the struggle of residents to seek fair competition because the government had not guaranteed compensation for them.
The mud had inundated dozens of villages, dozens of factories, and hectares of ricefields. (**)
